Incredible Course, Terrible Golf

Yesterday we played Gullane. Course number two (of three). Frankly, I’m sure any of the dozen or more courses along that gorgeous strip of rugged Scottish seaside would’ve been unbelievable, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Gullen was the pick.

It was a classic links course. Wide open. Windy. Scruffy grass lining every fairway. Just short enough to give you hope of finding your ball. Long enough to make sure you didn’t most of the time.

You climb a hill from hole two, then remain on a plateau of sorts for the remainder of the round. You see all the way across the water. Sweeping views to Arthur’s Seat, the Port of Leith, Queensferry Bridge, Fife.

The weather was stunning. My golf? Not so much. But it almost didn’t matter.
