Time Travelling

Time feels strange right now. For the first time in maybe fifteen years, I shared a bed with my dad last night. I’ve been used to waking up leisurely around nine or ten in the morning. This morning, I think he was up around 4am? Even if that wasn’t normal (it is completely normal), that kind of schedule misalignment is expected with the difference in jet lag.

We’re watching the Lions play in the finals at 10:30am. In an Irish pub down the road. That also feels off. Pretty much all of that statement. Glad we can see the game at a reasonable hour, though.

Returning to the flat here in Edinburgh for the second time this week feels entirely different. Similar to Christmas 2024, but with others around as well. A distinct shift from it being just Mary and I a week ago. When she was back home in 2024, I was always up early, on my computer, just like this. It would be dark and gloomy here until 9:30am at least in the Winter, but that’s when Brisbane is awake.

At that time, I was also first really pouring my energy in to building something larger than myself with Acuity. All year, I’ve been trying to maintain that across time zones. I wonder whether parents are always confused by my messages delivering at 3am.

I wake up, and things have happened back home. I’ve travelled forward in time. Pressed the skip button. I’ve come to let go of the fear there gradually this year. Whatever happens overnight, I can’t change anyway.

It was odd texting Mary before sleeping last night, though. She’s still in the same city. It was the first time I’ve done that in nine months (when we were split up in February, I didn’t have my phone). It feels strange now, but that was so commonplace back home. Or when I was here last, in 2024.

Everything feels like a bit of a fever dream at the moment. Not bad. Just unusual, in the most literal sense. More golf and great times await. I want to make sure I’m fully present for it, amongst all the bizareness.
