Checking in from Cozy Cambridge
Hey! It’s been a long while. August is nearly done. For the rest of the month I’ll be in Cambridge. We catch the train up to Edinburgh on September 1st.
There is less friction than ever right now. Compared to moments earlier in the year, life feels incredibly easy, honestly. English is once again the default language. Between our friends and family across the UK, hospitality is abundant. The summer days are long. The temperature mellow.
That doesn’t mean I’m at by best. Quite the opposite. I’ve been relaxed. Sometimes slack. Sometimes lazy. Enjoying great company, and caring a little less.
Cambridge has been wonderful. Strictly speaking, I haven’t accomplished an awful lot. We’ve felt very at home in a beautiful house of long-time friends and exceptional hosts. Great sleeps. Slow mornings. Family dinners. Gorgeous dogs. Wine. We’ve just slotted in to the day-to-day Summer lifestyle.
Cambridge is cozy. The tourism perhaps shouldn’t have caught me by surprise, but it did. The place is busy. I like it, though. The whole university-town vibe feels welcoming, and there are plenty of unmistakably British eccentricities around to certainly remind me that I’m not in Spain anymore.
We visited the Fitzwilliam museum today. Incredible place. Not least because it’s entirely free and open to the public!
But truly, I feel like I haven’t given museums that time of day that they deserve so far this trip. There would’ve have been many amazing museums I could’ve visited, but I haven’t really sought them out. Today reminded me how much I actually enjoy history, and art, and just learning somewhat trivial things.
Anyway, we’re thriving. Ironically, there has been plenty of free time, and yet I’ve hardly touched this blog for the past fortnight. I’ve reinstated my writing goal on Beeminder. Always a good forcing mechanism for actually making good on initiatives that I think are good ideas, not just fantasising about them in theory.
